Check out all of our frequently asked questions below. We’ve tried to compile the most common questions we receive in one convenient location.

Is my Photo Valet going to be a professional photographer?

All of our Photo Valets operate with professionalism and are excellent photographers. Our Photo Valets are personable, know how to interact with guests, and have a strong sense for photo composition. However, we do not consider ourselves “professional photographers.” Our Photo Valets have a strong background with photography but typically do not do photography as their primary career. We recruit college students, aspiring artists, up-and-coming photographers, and other individuals who are passionate about photography to work as Photo Valets. They all use high-end fully automatic digital SLR cameras so that all of our clients get the same great quality images.

Can the Photo Valet take portraits or staged shots at my event?

No, we do not take professional portraits or do staged shots that require lighting, backdrops, or other equipment. Our Photo Valets are more than happy to take a group or individual photo, but please keep in mind that we’re not going to have the equipment with us to do a proper “portrait” type of photo. We exclusively take candid photos with a digital SLR camera.

How do my photos get delivered to me?

Within 24 hours of your event we’ll e-mail you a link where you can download all of your event photos. You can go there to download all of the photos. Or you can browse the photos and just download the ones you want. You’re welcome to share the link with family and friends. Only the people with the unique link can access and download the photos.

Do I need to buy prints or pay for digital copies of the photos?

We don’t have any extra fees or hidden costs. You just pay us to hire a Photo Valet and then we give you all of the unedited raw images that we took at your event. You own the rights to the photos and you can do whatever you want with them. Unlike many professional photographers we’re proud to provide straightforward and honest pricing.

What type of camera do the Photo Valets use?

All of our Photo Valets use a high quality fully automatic digital SLR camera. Each Photo Valet may use a slightly different brand (Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc) but all of the cameras take high resolution images and have a built in flash.

What do you mean by "candid photos"?

There is no rule that says when something is a portrait versus when it’s candid. Our Photo Valets will still “stage” some shots at an event (such as getting the bridal party at a wedding if requested), but you shouldn’t expect these to be of any better quality than any other candid photo. We like to say that all of our photos are “Facebook quality” photos. So while they are high quality photos, they aren’t what you’d get if you were paying $600/hr for portrait photos. In many ways it’s easier to explain what a candid photo is not. A candid photo is not overly staged or meant to be “picture perfect.” If you hired a photographer to take a portrait for your child’s graduation, this would not be a candid photo. Candid photos may still be “staged” in the sense that our Photo Valets can take a group shot of everyone looking at the camera. However, we don’t come with the lighting, backdrops, or extra staff to do a staged portrait. A candid photo is usually just a shot that captures a moment as it happens at your event. For example, our Photo Valets will take lots of candid photos of the cake cutting at a wedding. Our Photo Valet will likely even ask the bride and groom to look at the camera. Additionally, we’ll take photos of people mingling during cocktail hour, dancing during a party, or a child opening gifts at their birthday party. These are all examples of candid photos. If you have any questions just give us a call and we’re more than happy to clarify.

Why are you so much cheaper than other photographers?

We’re going after a different type of customer than most professional photographers. We think that the family photo album is dead. Our customers don’t want 10 photos that they can print out and put in their photo album. Our customers want 1,000 photos that they can share with friends and family online. And out of those 1,000 photos there will be maybe 1 or 2 that are worthy enough to get printed, framed, and put on the fireplace mantle. And this is why we’re so much cheaper. It doesn’t cost that much to go to an event and take candid photos with a digital camera. A professional photographer is going to come to your event, take photos, do staged portraits (maybe with an assistant), spend hours editing your photos after the event, and then presenting you with just the top 100 photos (even though they make have taken 5,000 photos). So when you hire a professional photography, you’re not just paying for the amount of time they are at your event. When you hire Valet Photos you’re basically just paying for the cost of us coming to your event.

Why should I hire Valet Photos instead of a professional photographer?

It depends what you’re looking for! If you just want 25 super high quality photos and they all need to be picture perfect, then you should pay a premium and go with a professional photographer. But if you’re like most people and just want to share your event photos online with family and friends (and maybe just print out a handful of them), then hiring Valet Photos is exactly what you need. We’re going to take hundreds and hundreds of photos an hour and give each and every one of them to you so that you can do what you want with them.

What type of training do you provide to your Photo Valets?

All of our Photo Valets are carefully vetted to ensure they have prior experience with use of a digital SLR camera. Before we send a Photo Valet to their first event we make sure to provide them in-depth training in several areas. First, we focus on making sure they know how to engage with guests at an event and what types of moments they should be taking photos of. Second, we provide advanced training on photo composition so that your photos look great. Third, we train all of our Photo Valets on our operations including how to upload the photos to our online dropbox. Finally, we go through common scenarios with our Photo Valets such as handling special requests, troubleshooting a camera issue, and solving minor problems (such as if the lights in the room aren’t bright enough).
